📢 Public Notice: Response to False Allegations against the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC)

  • by

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) expresses deep concern over a series of recent publications and online posts falsely attributed to the Institute. These materials, are not only factually inaccurate and defamatory, but appear to be a calculated effort to mislead the public and undermine the reputation and integrity of ICMC.

The Institute categorically rejects these claims and urges the public to exercise discernment. The full facts of the matter are well known to both MTI and Amb. Ogunyanwo, and any attempt to distort the truth is both regrettable and unacceptable.

ICMC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and service to its members and the broader mediation community. In light of these developments, the Institute wishes to clarify the following:

  1. Termination of Relationship with MTI
ICMC formally ended its collaboration with MTI following repeated breaches of trust and a lack of transparency in business dealings. MTI previously served as a service provider for mediation training in Nigerian law schools. The decision to terminate this relationship was made in the best interest of our candidates, the profession, and the integrity of the Institute. A public disclaimer was issued and widely circulated through our official communication channels.
  2. Unauthorized Training Activities
MTI unilaterally joined ICMC with International Law Association (ILA) without any prior consent of ICMC first sought and obtained. ICMC did not authorize, has never authorized, and was not involved in any training program referenced in the recent allegations. The Institute only became aware of these activities after receiving complaints from affected students. MTI used ICMC’s name without consent to promote and conduct the training
  3. No Financial Involvement
ICMC has not received any payments—either from students or from MTI—in connection with the disputed training program. Nevertheless, in good faith and as a demonstration of its commitment to the students, ICMC inducted 1,982 candidates on July 7, 2025.
Currently, the number of students under consideration stands at approximately 1,070, contrary to the figure of 900 being circulated by MTI. This discrepancy underscores the need for transparency.

ICMC categorically states that it does not owe MTI any funds. Any assertions to the contrary are both false and deliberately misleading. Students are therefore advised to direct all inquiries regarding payments and accountability to MTI, the organization that collected their fees.
Going forward, ICMC will only conduct further inductions upon receipt of the appropriate remittances from MTI.

  1. Commitment to Good Faith and Resolution
ICMC has consistently operated in good faith and remains committed to resolving concerns peacefully and constructively. We welcome dialogue with all affected parties and are open to fair and transparent engagement.

It is regrettable that instead of fulfilling its obligations, MTI has chosen to disseminate falsehoods in an attempt to shift blame and discredit ICMC. These actions reflect a lack of accountability and professionalism.

ICMC welcomes investigation by the EFCC and other relevant agencies and will cooperate fully with any inquiries. However, we will not tolerate defamation and are prepared to take all necessary legal steps to defend our name and uphold our integrity.

We urge our members, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the misinformation currently circulating. ICMC remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, integrity, and truth in the advancement of mediation and dispute resolution. Our certification process remains uncompromised and continues to reflect the highest professional standards in Nigeria and beyond.

Finally, we assure all affected students that their concerns are being thoroughly reviewed, and appropriate decisions will be communicated in due course.
