Meet one of our Speakers – Prof. Offornze D. Amucheazi, SAN, FCArb, FICIARB, FICMC

Offornze D. Amucheazi is a Professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria with thirty-four years’ experience in legal practice and law teaching. He has taught at both the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He is a founding partner in the law firm Amucheazi, Ozioko and Company with offices in Abuja and Enugu.

Offornze is an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association and has held several positions, including Member of the Council of Legal Education, Member of the National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Assistant Secretary, and Secretary of the Enugu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, among others. He has also served on multiple committees of the Nigerian Bar Association at both branch and national levels.

Professor Amucheazi is a Fellow and a Member of the Governing Council of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC). He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCArb) and the Institute of Construction Industry Arbitrators (FICIARB). He holds certificates in ‘Strategic Leadership Management’ from Oxford University and ‘Constitution Building in Africa’ from the Central European University Budapest.

Professor Amucheazi has extensive legal expertise in labour law, arbitration, and ADR practice, having served as an arbitrator in numerous proceedings.
He is a member of the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA) and sits on the Editorial Board of the LCA Dispute Resolution Journal, the ICIARB International Journal of Construction Arbitration, and the ICMC’s Nigerian Journal of Mediation and Conciliation (NJMC). Offornze served as a Consultant and Special Assistant to Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, playing a key role in the establishment of the Africa Finance Corporation.

He also contributed as a Legal Expert in Constitution and Legislative Procedure at the Policy Analysis and Research Project (PARP) of the National Assembly. Subsequently, he became the pioneering Legal Adviser at the National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS), now known as the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS). From 2012 to 2019, he served as the Lead Consultant to the Senate Committee of the National Assembly, where he oversaw the review of the 1999 Constitution.

Additionally, he provided advisory support to the World Bank on regulatory compliance and the impact of government policies and legislation on World Bank projects in Nigeria. He has published several scholarly articles on labour law, arbitration, and constitutional law, and authored and co-authored numerous books, including: “Thematic Issues in Nigerian Arbitration Law and Practice”, The Judiciary, Politics and Constitutional Democracy in Nigeria (1999-2007), The Concept of True Federalism in Nigeria, The National Industrial Court of Nigeria: Law, Practice and Procedure (1st and 2nd editions), Constitutional Review in an Emerging Democracy: The Nigerian Experience, Employment and Labour Law in Nigeria, Employees’ Compensation Under Nigerian Labour Law and the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, and Progressive Development of Labour and Employment Law in Nigeria. He currently serves as the Commissioner for Lands in Anambra State.
