FAMILY MEDIATION – (20 Units)
Disputes are inevitable in every form of human interaction and the family unit is no exception. These disputes can occur between couples or between other members of the family.
The causes of these conflicts can range from finances, to property and custody of the children. Family mediation has become an aspect of mediation that has gained traction in recent times with the surge in separation and divorce cases.
Family Mediation is an aspect of Mediation where the mediator assists couples and other family members facilitate communication in order to seek amicable options available which are suitable to their needs. Because family disputes are multi-faceted and complex, a family mediator must have a broad perspective to attend to the underlying issues.
This course will teach course participants how to provide parties in a dispute with a supportive atmosphere and a method of talking to one another, to assist them in resolving their issues and come up with acceptable solutions, and reach mutually satisfactory agreements.

PSYCHOLOGY OF MEDIATION – (10 Units)
In mediation sessions, parties are bound to come to the mediator with their personality traits which may be positive or negative. Psychology is the study of how people think, feel, behave and factors that influence their decisions.
People have different personalities and so often understand and process information differently. Their perceptions, beliefs and feelings could therefore affect their understanding of issues.
For the Mediator to assist parties reach an amicable solution, awareness of emotion is necessary and sensitivity to the personality traits of the disputing parties is equally important. The Mediator must develop skills on how to manage people with difficult personalities.
This course will first teach participants how to manage their own emotions and how to manage the psychology and emotions of parties, to guide parties to arrive at resolution without basing such decisions on emotions but on information and rational thinking.
