Driving #SDG16 Forward: ICMC’s Commitment to Peace and Justice in Africa.

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC), Africa’s foremost professional body for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), continues to champion the global call to action outlined in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

On Wednesday, 4th June, 2025, ICMC President, Godwin Omoaka, SAN, FCIArb, paid a courtesy visit to Prof. Ozonnia Ojielo, FICMC, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Rwanda and Founding President of the Institute. This strategic engagement centered on strengthening collaboration between ICMC and the United Nations in promoting mediation as a key mechanism for resolving disputes and enhancing access to justice across Africa.

During the meeting, both leaders explored opportunities for advancing institutional partnerships, integrating mediation into national justice frameworks, and enhancing community-based peacebuilding efforts. Rwanda’s progress in justice sector reform and conflict resolution served as a foundation for exchanging innovative and scalable practices.

This meeting signifies a major milestone for the Institute in its effort to foster global cooperation, deepen its impact, and ensure that mediation remains a cornerstone of peaceful, inclusive societies.

Lastly, ICMC is committed to advancing peace through professional mediation training, certification, and policy engagement. As we grow our footprint across Africa and beyond, we remain dedicated to promoting justice, reducing conflict, and supporting strong institutional frameworks that serve communities.
