Meet our Speaker – Ms. Nita Yawanarajah

Ms. Nita Yawanarajah is a Malaysian National and is currently the Senior Conflict Adviser and Mediator at Oxford Process. 

Ms. Yawanrajah is an international conflict resolution practitioner with over twenty years experience in diplomatic and military issues, with a high level of experience in the field of international organizations.

Prior to her current role, she served in the United Nations (1995 – 2009) in Rwanda, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. She also supported other peace-building situations such as Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and the Darfur and Western Sahara mediation process.

She also participated in UN peacemaking efforts for Darfur and Western Sahara. She was a founding member of the UN’s Mediation Support Unit at UN HQ, New York. In 2007, she received the UN Secretary-General’s 21 Award for Knowledge Management for creating the UN’s first database, ‘UN Peacemaker’, for peace agreements and peacemaking.

Ms. Yawanrajah also served as the Head of Good Offices at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London from 2009 to 2016 where she carried out preventive diplomatic missions to catalyze the democratic transitions in the Maldives and Swaziland.

Ms. Yawanrajah is currently undertaking research on how to mediate durable ceasefires at the war studies department of Kings College, London.

She will be speaking on; The place of Dialogue, Mediation, and Conciliation in Effective Mitigation of Conflicts in a Polarised Society
