On 5th October 2023, Exco Members of ICMC Enugu Branch and the Vice President Communications and Strategy, Hon. Cyril Uche Anioke, paid a courtesy Visit to the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon.Uche Ugwu.
The Chairman ICMC Enugu Branch, Barr.S.I.D. Iyida after introducing members of his Team, informed the Speaker that ICMC Congratulates him on his appointment as the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly.
He told the Speaker that ICMC is ready to work with him in ensuring relative Peace and conflict resolution is attained through Mediation process in Enugu State.
He made it clear that Litigations are now giving way to Alternative Dispute Resolutions which is one of the major functions of ICMC as a Training Institute.
He stressed the need for a three-day special intensive Training of members of the State Assembly, since they are the representatives of the People.
He also informed the Speaker that the Institute had in past trained some Judges as Mediators. He further notified the Speaker about the 2023 Annual Lecture series taking place in Enugu on 2nd November 2023; noting that a formal invitation would be forwarded to him whilst, handing over to him the Institute’s Program for the Training of his House Members.
In the same vein, the Vice Chairman of ICMC ENUGU Branch, Chief Chukwuneke A. Echesi thanked the Speaker for the audience given to the Team inspite of his busy schedule.
He re-emphasized the need for the Training of Members and Staff of the Enugu State House of Assembly as Mediators at different levels. He also informed the Speaker of the importance of all the Members of the State Assembly attending this year’s Annual Lecture with Theme: MANAGING COMMUNUAL CONFLICT THROUGH MEDIATION: A FOCUS ON THE TRADITIONAL INSTITUTION AND TOWN UNION ADMINISTRATION IN ENUGU STATE.
In a vote of thanks, the National Vice President Communications and Strategy, Hon.Cyril Uche Anioke thanked the Speaker for giving audience to the Team whilst noting that Legislators are Peace Makers since they are closer to the people.
He stated that Peace is the best thing that can happen to any State whilst commending the leadership qualities of the Speaker, noting that the Institute will not take his reception and humility for granted.
He thanked the Speaker for the role he played in ensuring that Enugu State had a Multi-Door Courthouse.
He made it clear that the proposal for the training of House Members was geared towards Sharpening their Skills in Leadership and Mediation.
Finally, he enjoined the Speaker to engage in co-operative Governance with the Executive Arm and wished him well in his assignment.
Replying, the Speaker after introducing the Minority Leader and the Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, thanked the ICMC TEAM for the Visit.
He confirmed that ICMC is a reputable organization because ADR is becoming a vital Tool for settling disputes.
On the training of members of the State House of Assembly, he said that though the Legislators are always busy, he would look for a way of creating time for the 3 days intensive training program by the Institute.
He promised to look into the proposal letter and get back to the Institute and thanked all for coming.
